Introduction/Investment
Tell the class that there will be a guest speaker coming into class to talk to the students and answer their questions.

The speaker must be an American Indian and comfortable talking about the experiences of being an American Indian.  By doing this, the students will see that American Indians are not the people that they picture in their minds based on popular media.

  • Make sure to email the questions ahead of time to the speaker to allow for him or her to think of answers

Whole-Class Activity
This part is to come after the practice part

As practice, the students will come up with individual questions and then turn them in to the teacher.  Based on the questions, the class will vote on the 5-10 best questions to ask the guest speaker.

Remind the class that it is important to be respectful but to ask questions that you would like an answer to.

As the teacher, regulate the questions and make sure that they are appropriate and help the students rephrase their questions.

Practice
Have the individual students come up with questions that they might have and offer help to the students.  This will be a good time to ask any question to find out an answer because there may never be the chance to ask an American Indian the question you have.

The other important thing to remind the students of is to be respectful and to ask appropriate questions.  The person coming to speak has taken time out of their day to be here and we don’t want to waste their time.  Show them how smart and respectful people we are.

Assessment
Have the students write exit slips about what they learned or if the speaker brought up any additional questions.

Add them to the bulletin board KWL when it is created.
