Introduction/Investment
For this lesson, put out different newspapers for the different Nations in Wisconsin.  All of these newspapers are available on the websites of each of the tribes.
  • Mazina’igan for the Ojibwe
  • Kalihwisaks for the Oneida
  • Traveling Time News for the Potawatomi
  • Mohican News for the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans

Ask the students what type of information they will find in the newspapers.  Record the information.

Content
In terms of the content for this lesson, little to no information is needed; in fact, the students will dictate the content.

The most important thing to emphasize that these newspapers are authentic and contemporary.

Whole-Class Activity
As a class, read one example of a news article.  Give students the opportunity to come and read portions of the newspaper if they so chose.  Give each and every student access to the newspaper.

Once the piece has been read, relate what they read to their thoughts from the introduction.  Did they find out what they thought? What surprised them about the newspapers? Was there something that they wish the article had addressed?  Probe the students to think about the news and what it tells us about the American Indian Nation it is from.

Practice
For practice, have each of the groups read an article from the newspaper they have in front of them and record the important information and what they learned from the articles.

Make sure the students’ think about what this tells us about who they are and what they are like in contemporary terms.

Have each group report out to the class about what they read and what they think this means to the Nation that they read.

Assessment
Have the students write out what they learned from this lesson on exit slips.

These exit slips will be added to a KWL chart about what they have learned, what to learn about American Indians.
