Introduction/Investment
Tell the students to come to the carpeted area because we are going to be reading and listening to a story.

Read Chap. 9 of the Mishomis Book to the class about the first Midewiwin (pronounced Ma-day-wen).

Tell the students to pay close attention to what the story tells us about the Midewiwin but also why the Midewiwin is important to the Ojibwe.
  • What is the result of this ceremony for the Ojibwe?
  • Why is this important to the Ojibwe?
  • Is there something in your life that has the same importance as Midewiwin does for the Ojibwe?

Important things to know about the Midewiwin:
  • A ceremony that grew out of the purpose to heal the whole of the nation
  • The Midewiwin is the traditional religion of the Ojibwe
  • Some Ojibwe are Catholics and Methodists
  • 8 known levels of the Midewiwin
  • Everything is interconnected with Midewiwin
  • Drum made of wood and deerskin to represent plants and also other animals.
  • Not only a time for spirituality, but also gives out the major tenets on how to live a good life
  • Something that everyone can live by.

Whole-Class Activity
So we just read about the Midewiwin.  What can you guys tell me about it? Talk to your neighbor for 3 minutes and then raise your hands when you are ready.

Once the pairs are ready to share, construct some of the content prior to giving it to them. See how much the students can get and then fill in the other information that you want them to have.

Make sure to flesh out the importance of Midewiwin and what it means to the Ojibwe. Try to have the students connect it with something in their own life.

Practice
Does this relate to anything in your life?  Pick a ceremony or reoccurring event in your life and write about it.  What is its meaning, importance, activities, etc.

Must be a descriptive story about the ceremony.

Assessment
The story around the important ceremony in their life.
